A Brief History Of
Fashion
Ancient up to 400 A.D
Clothing from the
ancient Greek & Roman based more on function rather than style.Clothing was
loose & flowing.Never tight & fitting.Tunics covered with layers
of draped clothes were common for both men & women that time.
Medieval 400-1400 A.D
Dress became more
modest than before with longer hemlines & sleeves.However clothing became
more extravagant with embroidery & beading.
Renaissance 1440-1550 A.D
There were many
styles in Renaissance period.Women robes(dresses with an attached bodice &
skirt).Women also began to show their hair adorned with jewels &
veils.Later sleeves become puffed &necklines were adorned with high
standing collars as well as voluminous skirts supported by hoops made
by wires or wickets
Elizabethan 1550-1605 A.D
During the Elizabethan period
clothing were covered every part of the body. Waist lines became
straight & sleeves became tight fitted rather
than ruffled women wore large gold pendants.They wore type of
hairnet & other similar designs were popular in this period.
Baroque 1605-1670 A.D
The 'Cavalier 'style'became popular. Trimmings were simple & confined to buttons ,buttonholes & lace.By 1630 sleeves became full & draped softly below the elbow revealing the wears lower arm for the first time in century.
Georgian 1670-1790 A.D
The richly decorated frocks were worn by wealthy women were often adorned with an 'Seychelles stomacher'.Ladies skirts were supported by hoops made of cane or rattan. Under the hoops & corset ladies wore knee length under garments with elbow length sleeves adorned with lace.
Regency 1790-1840 A.D
In this stage they wear embroidered silk frocks.Properly dressed were wore Spencer or pelvises out of door along with a broad brimmed hat tied under the chin with a ribbon.
Victorian 1840-1890 A.D
In this era dresses were
composed several layers of different shades.In
the Victorian era also show the progression
from crinoline skirts to hoops skirts & finally to bustled
skirts

During this era dresses of the women were designed with an
's' curve.The 'Gibson Girl' became popular as well as the suit,hard collar
and tie.During the later part of the era fashion changed from 'S'shape
clothing to the straight line clothing.
